James Cuno was named president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, Los Angeles, effective Aug. 1.
Getty trustees selected Mr. Cuno after an extensive international search that began nearly a year ago, shortly after the death of James Wood.
Mr. Cuno is president of the Art Institute of Chicago. He announced his departure to staff in Chicago on Monday. Mr. Wood, whom Mr. Cuno is replacing at Getty, also came to the trust after a career at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Deborah Marrow, who has been serving as interim president at the Getty, will resume her position as director of the Getty Foundation after Mr. Cuno's arrival.
Tom Pritzker, Art Institute board chairman, said the museum, “will be moving forward immediately to form a search committee” to replace Mr. Cuno.
The Getty Trust has a $4.8 billion endowment.
