Matthew Mullarkey will join hedge fund specialist consulting firm Aksia as a consultant on May 9, according to sources who asked not to be identified.
Mr. Mullarkey's appointment is part of an expansion of Aksia's consulting capabilities, said one of the sources.
Jim Vos, Aksia's CEO, head of research and principal, declined to comment.
Mr. Mullarkey is an investment officer who specializes in hedge funds at the $140.6 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund, Albany. Aksia was consultant for the fund's approximately $4 billion hedge fund portfolio until the firm's contract expired March 31. Albourne Partners took over the advisory role from Aksia.
Mr. Mullarkey is the third member of the public fund's hedge fund team to leave for a private company in the past five months. Senior investment officers Peter Carey and Robert Mazurek left the fund in November to join SkyBridge Capital's hedge fund-of-funds business.
Olayinka Fadahunsi, a state pension fund spokesman, did not return a call by press time regarding replacements on the fund's hedge fund oversight team for Messrs. Mullarkey, Carey and Mazurek. Efforts to reach Mr. Mullarkey were unsuccessful.
