CalSTRS hired Trian Fund Management, the activist hedge fund run by Nelson Peltz, Anne Sheehan, CalSTRS' director of corporate governance, told Pensions & Investments Monday.
An informed source said the $150.1 billion California State Teachers' Retirement System, West Sacramento, would invest $300 million.
Trian buys large minority stakes in U.S. corporations. It then pushes for operational changes to create long-term value.
A CalSTRS spokesman could not provide any details by press time.
