David Meister was named director of enforcement at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, according to a spokesman.
No start date has been set.
He replaces Gregory Mocek, who left the CFTC in the summer of 2008 to join the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery.
Stephen Obie, regional administrator in New York, and later Vincent McGonagle, deputy enforcement director, had served as acting enforcement directors, according to a CFTC news release.
Mr. Meister is a partner at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, serving in the firm's white-collar crime group.
