John Petzold was named director of investment management and deputy chief investment officer at the California State Teachers' Retirement System, West Sacramento.
The position is new. He will oversee the administration of the $129.7 billion system's investment branch.
CalSTRS CIO Christopher J. Ailman said in a news release that the position makes Mr. Petzold a peer with directors in global equities, fixed income, private equity, real estate and corporate governance.
“The position comprises both the broad administrative duties of a deputy chief investment officer and the more focused responsibilities of a director of an asset class,” according to the news release.
Mr. Petzold has served 30 years in various positions at CalSTRS in benefits accounting and investments, most recently serving as CalSTRS' director of investment operations.
CalSTRS spokesman Ricardo Duran could not be reached for further details.
