Michael D. Underhill has run, swum and biked his way through 25 triathlons and marathons since 1999, all to raise money to support cancer research.
When he's not preparing for his next race, Mr. Underhill is chief investment officer of Capital Innovations LLC, an infrastructure investment firm based in Hartland, Wis.
For Mr. Underhill, it is personal. He lost his father to cancer in 1999 and several other relatives over the years, he said.
“The fact is that one out of every four people is affected by cancer in some way,” he said.
Money raised with the help of sponsors and colleagues supports Mr. Underhill's cancer research foundation, the Underhill Family Cancer Foundation.
His most recent event was the Pewaukee Triathlon in Pewaukee, Wis. The three-part race consisted of a swim at Pewaukee Lake, a bike course around the lake and a run that ended a few blocks from the event site.
In all, the three-member Team Capital Innovations has raised about $77,000 through 24 marathons and one triathlon. But Mr. Underhill and his team are not resting on their winnings. They have a marathon in Athens, Greece scheduled on Oct. 31.
