Bill Muysken was named chief investment officer of alternative alpha strategies at Mercer's manager-of-managers business, confirmed spokesman Charles Salmans.
The position is new; Mr. Muysken will begin in mid-May.
He will oversee investment management of alternative alpha strategies that make significant use of short selling, leverage, derivatives or are narrowly niche-focused or esoteric in nature, according to a Mercer news release. He also will develop and launch new strategies and provide oversight of existing strategies under Mercer management.
He will report directly to Rich Nuzum, president and global head of Mercer's investment management business.
Mr. Muysken was a portfolio manager for hedge fund and fund-of-funds manager Thames River Capital, which is being acquired by F&C Asset Management. Prior to that, he was global head of research at Mercer.
Thames River spokeswoman Marina Sejer-Hansen could not be reached for comment.
