Oregon state Treasurer Ben Westlund died early Sunday. He was 60.
As treasurer, Mr. Westlund was chairman of the Oregon Investment Council, which manages the $52.4 billion Oregon Public Employees Retirement System, Salem.
Gov. Ted Kulongoski will select an interim replacement, said James Sinks, spokesman for the council.
Mr. Westlund underwent treatment for a recurrence of lung cancer in autumn.
