The VantagePoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for children and spouses of public employees who have died in the line of duty, has launched an effort to raise $1 million by the end of 2011.
The fund was founded in 2001 by ICMA-RC, a Washington-based non-profit organization that provides retirement plans and services to more than 900,000 public employees nationwide. The December 2011 fundraising deadline coincides with the fund's 10-year anniversary, said Gregory Dyson, senior vice president and chief operations and marketing officer of ICMA-RC.
He said the fundraising effort will help provide more students with scholarships and establish a principal amount for the fund. “We want to be able to help people follow the dreams of their parent or spouse,” Mr. Dyson said in a phone interview. He said the fund has awarded a total of more than $685,000 to more than 200 students nationwide since its inception. For more information, visit the fund's website. — Timothy Inklebarger
