Dow Jones Indexes
This supplement will put the multi-year climb and then quick drop in commodity prices into
perspective. We looked at how institutional investors moved into the category, what happened when commodities collapsed beginning in the middle of last year and how commodities failed
to provide the portfolio diversification that most investors expected.
As the dust begins to settle, the debate over diversification and correlation is gathering steam and commodities are at its heart. Some investors are quick to dismiss the entire class because it didn’t provide diversification last year, but that may be short-sighted. In fact, some pension funds are
moving to increase their allocations to commodities, but in a more selective manner.
