Investment consultancy Allenbridge Group PLC offers a psychologist service that, in normal times, typically assists young people who have inherited a lot of money to deal with the effects of suddenly being redefined by their wealth.
But these aren't normal times.
Anthony Yadgaroff, group managing director at the London-based firm, said recent work includes helping hedge fund managers come to terms with having had a lot and then losing it all because of the severe market downfall. In 2008, the Hedge Fund Research Inc. Fund Weighted Composite index fell 18.3%, the worst on record.
Nicola Glucksmann, a psychotherapist in London who works with Allenbridge, said she now has five hedge fund clients who are experiencing a tremendous assault on their self-esteem.
These are highly talented and intelligent men and women, and they will be able to see things through to the next opportunity that comes along, said Ms. Glucksmann. But like many who are highly successful, they live with a secret fear that they are always about to be "found out.' When markets turn like this, that fear catches up with them and they get completely knocked. Thao Hua
