News item: An e-mail intended for managers that warned about the burden of keeping underperforming staff members at AllianceBernstein Holding LP, New York, was inadvertently sent to some U.K. staff members, thus sending employee morale tumbling as fast as the stock markets, according to a published report.
John Meyers, AllianceBernstein spokesman, confirmed that employees are rated on performance, but added, There are no across-the-board plans for layoffs here.
Our question: Is an employee considered underperforming after he or she sends a managers-only e-mail to regular staffers? Mr. Meyers had no comment, but we're guessing it can't help. Drew Carter
