James Poterba was named president and CEO of the National Bureau of Economic Research, effective July 1, confirmed spokeswoman Donna Zerwitz. He replaces Martin Feldstein, who will retire and become president emeritus. Mr. Poterba will continue as the Mitsui Professor of Economics and head of the economics department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where, according to an NBER statement, he researches tax-deferred retirement saving programs, such as 401(k) plans and the role of annuities in financing retirement consumption.
