A small-cap growth equity portfolio management team led by Ryan P. Carr, a former senior vice president and senior portfolio manager with Oppenheimer Investment Management, launched a boutique called Sparta Asset Management, according to two independent sources who declined to be named. Mr. Carr will be Sparta Asset Managements CIO and Neil A. Wilkinson, formerly a managing director with Oppenheimer, will be CEO and chief compliance officer.
One of the sources, a pension consultant, said the team which includes Mr. Carr; Kerry Wate, formerly a vice president and portfolio manager at Oppenheimer; Alexis Takacs, formerly an assistant vice president for Oppenheimers small-cap strategy; and Tim Vediz, formerly an assistant vice president and trader/analyst has posted stellar returns for its Taft-Hartley-focused client base.
According to eVestmentAlliance, Oppenheimers small-cap growth equity strategy has returned an annualized 17.8% from its October 1995 inception through June 30, outpacing the 6.02% return for its Russell 2000 growth benchmark over the same period.
Neither Mr. Wilkinson nor Tom Robinson, president of Oppenheimer Investment Management, was immediately available for comment.
