Yes, finding attractive hedge fund names remains difficult, but now there is a solution: www.namethatfund.com.
The site features more than 100 domain names for a would-be hedge fund such as ivypark.com (packaged with toll-free phone number 1-877-IVY-PARK), lasallestreet.com and sterlingsquare.com.
Namethatfund.com is the brainchild of Michael W. Carter, a midlevel executive with a New York-based hedge fund he preferred not to identify. The naming dilemma stayed in Mr. Carters mind long after reading about the problem in the summer of 2005. He spent a year mulling over a possible solution and launched the website last summer. Mr. Carter creates hedge fund names or finds domain names that are expiring on Internet registration sites and snaps them up. He adds one or two new names per month and makes them available for a minimum bid of $2,500. The final cost is negotiated, he said.
I wanted the websites format to be similar to craigslist.com: plain, clean, youre in and youre out. My emphasis is on quality, and Im definitely not volume driven, Mr. Carter said, adding he has sold one name so far. He does not advertise the site, which he maintains as something of a hobby.
