NYSE Group and the Tokyo Stock Exchange will announce a strategic alliance on Wednesday.
The joint announcement will be made by John Thain, NYSE CEO, and Taizo Nishimuro, TSE president and CEO. The cooperation is expected to focus on trading technology and cross-listings.
The alliance between the world's two largest exchanges comes while the NYSE is moving closer to sealing its merger with Euronext, which could create the first exchange group with a presence on three continents.
Officials of the Tokyo market had earlier said they might consider forging some ties with a European exchange. Earlier this month, the NYSE was part of an investment group that took a 20% stake in India's National Stock Exchange.
The NYSE has been more successful in its international strategy than its main U.S. rival, Nasdaq, whose bid for the London Stock Exchange was rejected last week.
