It reflects the unique nature of the firm, she said, which specializes in alternative investments and focuses on hedge funds, private equity, commodities and real estate to satisfy the growing appetite of U.K. and European institutional investors that are new to these asset classes.
Clontarf is a one-stop shop for consulting advice, research, due diligence and on-going monitoring, Ms. Devitt said.
After four years as a specialist investment consultant and head of the hedge fund practice in the London office of Cambridge Associates LLC, Ms. Devitt said she perceived a real need for specialist consulting advice covering the full span of alternative investments. Only a few other U.K.-based consultants specialize in alternatives and most, like hedge fund specialist Albourne Partners Ltd., London, concentrate on only one asset class.
As for the firm's name, Ms. Devitt, who is Irish, said it is a reference to Clontarf, now a suburb of Dublin, where Brian Boru, high king of Ireland, and his allies routed a band of marauding Vikings in a famous battle in 1014. Anticipating questions, the firm's website — www.clontarf.com — provides additional explanation: "The name Clontarf derives from the Irish words Cluain Tarbh, meaning ‘the Plain of the Bull,' a reference to the rumbling noise which was made by the sea as it rolled over the sandbanks of Dublin Bay."
