William F. Glavin Jr. was named head of the individual insurance group at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance, said spokesman Jim Lacey. Mr. Glavin's title has yet to be determined, said spokesman Mark Cybulski. He was president and CEO of Babson Capital, an asset management subsidiary of MassMutual. Roger Crandall, Babson chairman and MassMutual CIO and executive vice president, will add the titles of Babson president and CEO, said Faith Yando, Babson spokeswoman. Mr. Glavin replaces Matthew E. Winter, who was named president and CEO of AIG American General Life today, according to a news release from that company. Mr. Winter succeeds Rodney O. Martin Jr., AIG executive vice president-life insurance, who was named COO of AIG's worldwide life insurance business earlier this year, according to the AIG American release.
Robert V. "Vince" Smith was appointed CIO of the $12 billion Kansas Public Employees Retirement System, Topeka, effective March 27, according to Glenn Deck, executive director. Acting CIO Scott Peppard will return to his previous position of deputy CIO. Executive search firm EFL Associates assisted in the search. Mr. Smith is currently director of international equity investments for the $21 billion Employees Retirement System of Texas, Austin. Spokesman Mary Jane Wardlow said the system has not yet begun to search for his replacement.
Gillie Tomlinson was named director of U.K. consultant relations for Northern Trust Global Investments, according to Gordon Hogarth, head of business development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. She replaces Amit Popat, who left the firm last year to pursue opportunities in the hedge fund industry, said Mr. Hogarth. The firm is expanding its business in the U.K. beyond its multimanager offerings, said Mr. Hogarth. Ms. Tomlinson was head of institutional business development at Artemis Investment Management. The company is in the process of filling her position, said spokesman Nick Wells.
