John McNulty, former global head of Goldman Sachs & Co.'s investment management division, died Wednesday of a heart attack, said Andrea Raphael, spokeswoman for Goldman Sachs Asset Management. He was 52 years old. Mr. McNulty retired from Goldman in 2002 to pursue philanthropic interests. He remained a senior director, consulting to outside clients.
When Mr. McNulty was named co-head of the investment division - which includes both GSAM and the firm's private wealth unit - in 1996, the firm had $95 billion in assets under management. He was named sole head of the business in 1999. By the time of his retirement, the firm managed $348 billion in assets.
