California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that would allow the $150 million San Diego Unified Port Authority to separate itself from the $3.9 billion San Diego City Employees Retirement System.
Port officials have no current plans to form an independent pension system, said Irene McCormick, spokeswoman. However, they did hire Sunland Consultant Group, which prepared a "game plan" for separation in the event they choose to do so, she said.
Rebecca Wilson, spokeswoman for the San Diego City Employees Retirement System, could not be reached by press time.
