Evergreen Investments restructured its equity operation and divided the unit into quantitative and fundamental teams with separate CIOs, according spokesman Dan Flaherty. Joseph DeSantis, former managing director and head of active equities at Deutsche Asset Management, was hired as CIO of the fundamental team. William E. Zieff will lead the global structured products group and will become the unit's CIO. Mr. Zieff, who has been with Evergreen for five years, was managing director and senior portfolio manager in charge of the firm's structured products. Both Messrs. DeSantis and Zieff will report directly to Christopher Conkey, Evergreen's chief investment officer. Mr. DeSantis will be responsible for a Boston-based team of 85 portfolio managers, analysts and traders that currently has $25 billion in assets under management in mutual fund and institutional separate accounts. Mr. Zieff will oversee seven Boston-based investment professionals responsible for $11 billion among domestic and international mutual funds and institutional separate accounts. Combined, the two groups represent roughly 14% of Evergreen's $249.9 billion in assets under management. Deutsche Asset Management spokeswoman Rosalia Scampoli could not provide details before press time on Mr. DeSantis' replacement.
