Standard & Poor's has completed the transition of its S&P/Citigroup global equity indexes to the Global Industry Classification Standard. S&P now provides historical data on the indexes from 1989, according to David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the index committee at S&P.
"There was a strong sense that people wanted as much history as they could get," Mr. Blitzer said. "In the decade of the '90s and then over the last five years, so much has happened in the market and so much has changed."
"People are grappling with new ways to design and measure strategy," Mr. Blitzer said. "Is it sectors or is it growth or value styles or is it cap size or is it a combination? Up until now, I don't think there's been a way to understand the interaction between sector and capitalization" outside the U.S. market.
