Work can be competitive if you're a money manager, especially at Gartmore Investment Ltd., London, which sponsors an all star rugby team called The Barbarians. The firm has been sponsoring the team, which has existed since 1890, since February 2004, said Gartmore spokeswoman Vee Montebello. The team gathers the best players from around the world and plays individual exhibition matches against teams from around the world at various locations.
"We've committed to the club for three years. They are all branded with Gartmore logos," said Ms. Montebello. She declined to say how much the firm pays to sponsor the team. "The reason we sponsor them is that we believe our values are very similarly aligned. We both look for opportunities and value."
She added that everyone at the firm is looking forward to two big upcoming matches: May 24, when the team plays Scotland, and May 28, when it plays archrival England. So far in 2005, the team beat East Midlands 48-17 but lost to Leicester 42-19.
