Several money management firms are prominent among Fortune magazine's 2005 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.
American Century Investments, Kansas City, Mo., is listed as the 14th best small company and 26th overall, highlighted by the $1,000 cash bonus awarded to every employee in 2003 to celebrate the return of a bull market. SEI Investments, Oaks, Pa., was 25th among small companies and 70th overall; its employees own nearly half of SEI stock through its ESOP plan.
The Vanguard Group, Valley Forge, Pa., is listed as the 21st best large company and 72nd overall. Vanguard received praise for its on-site master of business administration degree program, in which the company foots the bill if an employee's grade average is an A or B.
The list includes other financial services companies such as Robert W. Baird & Co. (18th overall), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (35th overall), American Express Co. (37th overall) and Principal Financial Group (61st overall).
Fortune's report, published in the Jan. 24 issue, also features the nine best company matches for 401(k)s. Alcon Laboratories Inc., Fort Worth, Texas, leads the pack with a 240% match, up to 5% of total compensation, Vanguard leads among financial services companies, with a 100% match up to 4% of total compensation.
