When 30 fund managers squeeze into Lycra cycling shorts late next month, it will be for a good cause.
The managers, mostly based in the United Kingdom, hope their five-day, 253-mile bicycle ride through Kenya will raise £80,000 ($142,000) to £100,000 for New Ways, a charity run by Angela Docherty, senior corporate investment consultant for Unilever PLC, London.
The money will provide nurseries and clean water for mainly nomadic people in northern Kenya. The nurseries provide children with education and two meals a day, five days a week, and have reduced child mortality rates by 25%. And women and children can spend many hours a day looking for water, so clean water from standpipes and nurseries for children can free mothers to attend educational and health care workshops.
Those signed up to pedal across Kenya include Ms. Docherty; Dan Lass, New York-based managing director of marketing at Pareto Partners; Tony Earnshaw, managing director of multimanagers at Northern Trust Global Investments, London; Stuart Dunbar, marketing manager at Baillie Gifford, Edinburgh; and Iain Urquhart, director of pensions at Trinity Mirror Pension Fund, London.
Donation checks from U.S. sponsors can be made payable to MCSPA and sent to Angela Docherty, Unilever House, P.O. Box 68, Blackfriars, London, England EC4P 4BQ. Further information can be found at www.justgiving.com/angeladocherty.
