The median multiemployer pension fund returned 17.2% for the year ended Dec. 31, compared with an 8.2% loss the previous year, according to Segal Advisors' annual survey of performance of such funds. Returns on total assets ranged from 13.2% to 22.6%.
The median return on equity for the year was 31.4%, exceeding the S&P 500 index return of 28.7%. Equity returns for the funds ranged from 27% to 39.7%. The median fixed-income return was 5.1%, topping the Lehman Aggregate Bond index return of 4.1%.
Segal surveyed funds with assets totaling $18.4 billion.
