Mergers and acquisition of portfolio companies owned by venture capital firms increased to $4.03 billion as of March 31, up from $2.3 billion three months earlier, according to Thomson Venture Economics and the National Venture Capital Association. There were 77 deals in which portfolio companies were merged or acquired in the first quarter. Of those whose transaction value was revealed, the average deal size was $89.6 million.
