CalPERS today nominated former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt and Relational Investors LLC founder Ralph V. Whitworth to the New York Stock Exchange board of directors, according to a news release from the California Public Employees' Retirement System, Sacramento. Citing their long-standing support for strong corporate governance policies, Sean Harrigan, board president of the $167 billion system, called the two "prime candidates" for the NYSE board. As part of its new structure, the Big Board for the first time is allowing investors to nominate director candidates. The NYSE nominating and governance committee is expected to review candidates with the full NYSE board and recommend a slate in April for election at the June 3 annual meeting. NYSE officials were not available for comment.
