Stocks ended 2003 on a mixed note as many investors locked in profits during a quiet trading session. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 28.88, or 0.28%, at 10,453.92; the S&P 500 rose 2.26, or 0.2%, closing at 1,111.9; and the Nasdaq composite was down 6.51, or 0.32%, to close at 2,003.37.
