The $118 million Hampshire County (Mass.) Retirement System placed international equity manager MFS on watch, said Mary Baronas, administrator. MFS runs about $15 million, she said. Officials made the move in response to potential market-timing action against the firm, Ms. Baronas said. They also are considering hiring a second international equity manager for diversification, she said, with the $15 million divided evenly between two firms. No time frame has been set for a search. John Reilly, MFS spokesman, did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
Separately, the plan hired Duff & Phelps to run about $2.3 million in the plan's first REIT investment, pending contract negotiations, Ms. Baronas said. Funding will come from rebalancing. CRA RogersCasey assisted.
