Hampshire County Retirement System, Northampton, Mass., placed international equity manager MFS on watch and might seek a second manager for that asset class, said Mary Baronas, administrator. MFS runs about $15 million, she said. Officials at the $118 million plan made the move in response to potential market-timing action against the firm, Ms. Baronas said. The second international equity manager would be added for diversification, she said, with the $15 million divided evenly between two firms. No time frame has been set for a search. John Reilly, MFS spokesman, did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
Separately, the plan hired Duff & Phelps to run about $2.3 million in the plan's first REIT investment, pending contract negotiations, Ms. Baronas said. Funding will come from rebalancing.
