The Dow Jones industrial average today closed above 10,000 for the first time since May 24, 2002, as positive retail sales reports helped buoy stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 86.3, or 0.87%, at 10,008.16; the S&P 500 rose 12.16, or 1.15%, closing at 1,071.21; and the Nasdaq composite was up 37.67, or 1.98%, to close at 1,942.32. All numbers are preliminary.
