Very few European pension schemes have heard of BDT.
"We go in to see the consultants, but we're not taken seriously. They usually say, ‘come back … when you have three years of track record and £1 billion under management'," said Simon Dobson.
He's one of the founders of the firm, which specializes in managing Japanese, Asian and emerging market portfolios.
Its flagship Asian equity fund, BDT Invest Asian Focus Fund, invests in Japanese, Asian and emerging markets equities.
Among BDT's top stock picks are China Insurance & Co. Ltd., United Broadcasting Corp. and Canon Inc.
The three founders have more than 40 years of combined experience in managing Asian equities. Before setting up BDT, Rob Brewis and Henry Thornton were emerging markets portfolio managers at Colonial First State Investments, London.
Mr. Dobson managed Asian equities at GT Management Ltd. in Singapore.
According to Gary Potter, a director of Credit Suisse Asset Management's multimanager unit in London — whose Constellation Fund specializes in investing in small, start-up firms — BDT's risk-adjusted performance is considerable.
"They're one of the best, if not the best, in this market segment," Mr. Potter said. Performance of BDT Invest Asian Focus has been outstanding, given that the firm began at the height of a bear market, he said.
"Our job is finding high conviction managers with good ability. These people are fantastic … their pensions, salary and their whole careers are tied to the performance of this manager," Mr. Potter said.
