UAL Corp., Chicago, today sought an extension from the IRS for pension contributions now due for its four underfunded defined benefit pension plans. The extension would allow UAL to spread the contributions over the next five years. The IRS typically decides on such requests within six to eight months after receiving the applications, but UAL warned it cannot guarantee whether the waiver will come in time to help the company exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. UAL's pension assets fell to 70% of current liabilities in January.
