Four pension funds - SBC, Nevada PERS, Kansas PERS and Montgomery County Schools -are searching for key staffers.
SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, Texas, is searching for a corporate manager-investment for its $24.9 billion defined benefit fund, $8.6 billion defined contribution fund, and other employee benefit funds.
Duties include developing and implementing investment guidelines for external investment managers, which number about 50 for U.S. and non-U.S. portfolios; negotiating fees with investment managers; and analyzing investment strategy, performance and risk management. Qualifications include experience in the application of financial and investment concepts.
The base pay is $60,000 to $75,000 a year, according to a source. Anyone interested may contact SBC.
Also, Jim McGuire, who was chief investment officer, now is managing director-cost analysis, a non-pension-related finance position. He was replaced by Lori Lee, who was given the title assistant treasurer. She was managing director-investor relations.
The $14 billion Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System, Carson City, is searching for an executive officer, following the retirement of George Pyne. The retirement board has appointed a subcommittee to conduct the search, and candidate interviews are expected at the board's October meeting, said Dana Bilyeu, operations officer.
An ad for the position will be posted on the National Association of State Retirement Administrators' website, www.nasra.org. The deadline for resumes is Aug. 15.
The $8.3 billion Kansas Public Employees' Retirement System, Topeka, is looking for an alternative investment officer to replace Janet Kruzel, who resigned in June.
The position requires an undergraduate degree in business, economics or finance; a CFA designation or equivalent experience; and five years of work in alternative investing or securities management.

The $600 million Montgomery County Public Schools Pension & Retirement System, Rockville, Md., is searching for an investment officer, replacing Steven Watts. Mr. Watts will join the $1 billion Arlington County (Va.) Employees' Retirement System as assistant director-investment officer, a new position, on Aug. 11.
The Montgomery County fund is seeking someone with experience in managing and investing retirement plan assets, analyzing and evaluating financial investment instruments, and money management on behalf of a large pension fund. The investment officer will work with trustees and managers.
