TIAA-CREF, in its first move of some investment operations from New York, is searching for a director-quantitative investments, a senior investment analyst, a head trader, a senior trader and other investment positions, all new, for a San Francisco investment office.
Patrick Connor, media relations officer, said the move is part of an effort to ensure business continuity.
"After Sept. 11 there is a feeling there should be more decentralizing of key decision-makers," Mr. Connor said. "This planning is going on throughout the financial services industry."
Hans Erickson, senior managing director-quantitative investments, will move to San Francisco from New York sometime this year to lead the new office. The quant and indexing operations in San Francisco and New York will work together.
"There will be some more (investment) people going out there" from New York, Mr. Connor said. "We don't have a definitive head count or date yet."
For the director-quantitative investments in San Francisco, TIAA-CREF is seeking "at least eight years of quantitative equity investment management experience including developing and managing daily portfolio/trading systems" and a Ph.D. or master's degree in quantitative studies. Duties will include developing and managing pure quantitative strategies with senior management and managing structured active portfolios in conjunction with active portfolio managers.
For the senior investment analyst, TIAA-CREF is searching for candidates with at least three years of investment management experience. Duties include daily portfolio performance analysis and accounting, including pricing and valuation.
For head trader, TIAA-CREF is seeking candidates with at least eight years of global stock trading experience with expert knowledge of equity markets and trading systems. Duties include managing a domestic and international trading desk, selecting brokers and coordinating trading activity with the New York trading desk.
For senior trader, qualifications include at least six years of global stock trading experience and a willingness to work non-U.S. trading hours. Duties include executing domestic and international trades electronically and selecting brokers.
TIAA also is seeking a trader for San Francisco with at least three years of global trading experience whose duties would include assisting in domestic and international trading and selecting brokers.
The analyst in San Francisco will perform investment research and analysis, among other duties. The qualifications include an undergraduate degree in business or accounting.
