U.S. Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, reported that pension and retirement costs increased by $61 million in the first quarter, compared with the same period a year earlier, contributing to the firms $38 million first-quarter loss, according to a spokesman for the $7.9 billion U.S. Steel & Carnegie Pension Funds. The spokesman, who asked not to be identified, said he couldnt comment on whether U.S. Steel plans to make any contributions to the funds or change any of the assumptions.
