Its too soon to tell whether US Airways Group Inc. will shut down its underfunded pension plans. The PBGC is monitoring the Arlington, Va., airline, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Sunday, but has not yet been notified of any plans to terminate the pension plans, a PBGC spokeswoman said. US Airways had pension assets of $3.14 billion at the end of fiscal 2001 and pension liabilities of $5.48 billion, for a shortfall of $2.34 billion, according to the companys 2001 annual financial report. Janice T. Emery, director of pension investments at the airline, did not return calls seeking comment by press time.
