Pensions & Investments is accepting entries for The Eddy Awards, formerly the Pensions & Investments Defined Contribution Investment Education Awards.
Entry forms and rules and regulations for the 2003 awards are available on P&I's website, at www.pionline.com/eddyawards. There is no charge to enter. All entries must be submitted by sponsors of defined contribution plans, although their service providers may assist in preparing the entries.
Entries are due Oct. 18. A panel of plan sponsors and others knowledgeable about investment education and communications will judge the entries over a two-day period in November.
Winners will be announced during a luncheon at P&I's annual winter defined contribution/401(k) conference, to be held Feb. 9-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
A few changes have been made to the annual awards program, most notably the name. William T. Bisson Jr., publisher of P&I and a vice president of parent company Crain Communications Inc., said the name change reflects the importance and increased recognition of the awards.
"These awards recognize excellence in the vitally important area of employee investment education, an area that can have a lasting impact on the well-being of employees. If the awards for something as ephemeral as movies can have an easily recognized name, The Oscars, the investment education awards also should have an easily recognized name," Mr. Bisson said. "The Eddy Awards will become the Oscars of investment education."
Another change is the return of the category "ongoing education." The P&I awards initially had included that category, but editors decided to scrap it four years ago when the number of "ongoing education" entries had dwindled.
"We have reinstated this category for the 2003 awards because ongoing education is very important," said Nancy K. Webman, editor of P&I. "Just look at what happened to plan participants at Enron (Corp.) and WorldCom (Inc.), who had a large concentration of their 401(k) assets in company stock. With proper investment education, they might have diversified out of company stock and wouldn't be in such terrible shape now. We feel P&I should encourage plan sponsors to recommit to ongoing investment education."
In addition to ongoing education, the major categories of The Eddy Awards are initial education, special projects and new media. Initial education, ongoing education and special projects are further divided into print and video entries. New media includes use of the intranet, Internet, e-mail and/ or any other new technology.
All categories are further divided by size (number of employees).
