Stocks plummeted today, with the S&P 500 falling to its lowest level since October 1998, as Qwest Communications International Inc. spurred new fears over corporate accounting. The Dow closed down 283, or 3.1%, at 8,813.09; the S&P 500 fell 32.43, or 3.4%, ending at 920.4; and the Nasdaq composite closed down 35.09, or 2.54%, at 1,346.03. All numbers are preliminary.
