When he's not throwing passes for the San Diego Chargers, quarterback Doug Flutie will be pitching for Sun Life Financial.
Sun Life, which has $15.2 billion in U.S. institutional assets under management, signed Mr. Flutie to an endorsement contract for 2002. He will be featured in a print advertising campaign and make appearances for the company in the United States. Sun Life Financial is the U.S. arm of Sun Life Financial Services of Canada, Toronto, which has $214 billion in assets under management.
The print ads, which already have run in the Wall Street Journal, play off the theme "Reaching Your Goals." Mr. Flutie, the 1984 Heisman Trophy winner and 1998 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, was selected because of his history of excellent performance on the field, his creativity and risk taking, and his ability to adapt to change and create opportunities.
"Doug is a proven leader and upholds the highest standards both on and off the field," said Jim McNulty, executive vice president for Sun Life's U.S. operations, in a statement.
Sun Life's relationship with Mr. Flutie began last year when the company sponsored The Doug Flutie Jr. Celebrity Golf Classic, which benefits the Doug Flutie Foundation for Autism. Mr. Flutie and his wife Laurie established the foundation in honor of their 9-year old son, Doug Jr., who was diagnosed with autism at age 3. The firm will continue to sponsor the golf tournament and the foundation's other major fund raising efforts.
