Public pension fund assets reached $2.2 trillion in 2000, up $263 billion from the previous year, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. It was the first time that combined assets of the 2,208 state and local pension funds passed the $2 trillion mark. More than $1.9 trillion in total assets was invested in U.S. and foreign securities, as well as real estate and cash. Investments in domestic stocks were $788 billion, with $271 billion in government securities.
