Participants who take active approaches to investing in defined contribution plans report they are more satisfied overall with their plans investment options than are hands-off investors, according to a survey of 1,557 defined contribution plan participants by Spectrem Group. They also were more willing to roll over retirement plan money to the plan provider than were passive investors, who tended to select other providers.
Some 33% of the respondents were active participants, meaning they made two or more changes in their accounts over the past year or had contacted the plan provider four or more times. Another 22% of respondents were passive investors, who made no account changes and had no contact with the plan for the past year.
