Venture capitalists invested $10.6 billion in 982 companies in the second quarter, according to statistics from Venture Economics and the National Venture Capital Association. Thats a 12% decline from the $12.1 billion invested in 1,121 companies in the first quarter, and a whopping 61% decline from the $27.2 billion invested in 1,873 companies in the second quarter of 2000. Venture Economics, which tracks these numbers for the association, also found that during the second quarter, investments in medical, health and life-science companies increased to 13.8% of total venture capital investments, up from 11.2% in the first quarter and 3.95% in the second quarter of 2000. The Internet category remained at the top of the list, attracting $3 billion, but its piece of the overall pie slid to 28.4% from 34.3% in the previous quarter.
