Greta E. Marshall, CalPERS first chief investment officer, died of cancer Sunday. Ms. Marshall, a resident of Incline Village, Nev., was 63. She was CIO at the California Public Employees Retirement System, Sacramento, from 1985 to 1988.
Ms. Marshalls first job at a pension fund sponsor was at Deere & Co., Moline, Ill., where she was director-investments from 1974 to 1978, overseeing the pension funds. Then she was president of BayBanks Investment Management, starting the banks asset management unit. After leaving CalPERS, she started The Marshall Plan, a money management firm specializing in quantitative small-cap equity investments; it was involved in several joint ventures with other investment firms.
She was an avid skier, making a trip only six weeks ago to British Columbia to snow-cap ski high in the mountains on fresh powder, said Pamela Emmerich, her niece.
Ms. Marshall also is survived by a son, Thomas; a brother, John Emmerich; and a nephew, Stephen Emmerich. No funeral service is planned, but a memorial service is being planned for this summer. Arrangements for donations are still being made.
