Emplanet, an online 401(k) service provider, laid off 10 employees, reducing its staff to 54 people. Gary Gould, senior vice president of business development, said the layoffs were part of a strategic refocusing and were not the result of a slowdown in the online business. He said those laid off were midlevel members of the product development team and that Emplanet expects to announce a round of new employee hires in its operations area. In addition, he said Emplanet is nearing a deal for "significant” venture funding.
