CalPERS acquired a 5% equity stake in global private equity firm The Carlyle Group for $175 million. The $170 billion California Public Employees Retirement System, Sacramento, also agreed to invest $250 million in several new Carlyle private equity funds, including U.S. venture and real estate funds, an Asian venture capital fund and a global energy fund. CalPERS also has the option of investing an additional $425 million with Carlyle over the next two years.
The investment comes on the heels of a similar deal CalPERS made with TPG Ventures, a new venture capital unit of Texas Pacific Group.
