The Savings Coalition of America is presenting The IRA Awards Wednesday in Los Angeles to a group of Democratic lawmakers, recognizing their contributions to promoting retirement savings. They are: Sens. Max Baucus of Montana and John Breaux of Louisiana; and Reps. Benjamin Cardin and Albert Wynn of Maryland, Dennis Moore of Kansas, John Tanner of Tennessee, Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota, Jerry Kleczka of Wisconsin and William Jefferson of Louisiana. The event coincides with the Democratic National Convention, which begins today in Los Angeles.
The Savings Coalition also hopes to educate delegates about pension and retirement issues in advance of the Senate Finance Committee markup of major pension legislation on Sept. 7, said Bill DeReuter, a lobbyist for Merrill Lynch and an organizer of the event. We have tried to treat this issue in a bipartisan manner, said Mr. DeReuter, who helped organize a similar event at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia earlier this month.
