Two retired brewery workers were awarded 264 pints, or 150 liters, of free beer a year as part of their pension benefits package, a German court in Frankfurt ruled Wednesday. In addition, the court ruled they should get back pay for three unpaid years worth of brew.
Kronen Privatbrauerei Dortmund, Dortmund, had promised workers and retirees 240 liters of free beer a year, but then held back after being taken over in 1996 by rival Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei, part of the Binding-Brauerei German food group. German sources said it was not unusual for German brewery workers and pensioned employees to be given benefits-in-kind such as free beer as part of their overall compensation package.
