California State Teachers Retirement System, with $110.7 billion in assets, returned 18.3% on its investments in 1999. In comparison, the median pension fund with more than $1 billion in assets, as measured by the Trust Universe Comparison System, returned 16.7% last year.
For the two-year period, Sacramento-based CalSTRS returned an annualized 17.9%, compared with 15.9% for the median TUCS return; and for the three-year period, the fund chalked up an annualized 17.3% return vs. the TUCS median 17.1%.
